M&S New Wines From Macedonia, Croatia & Turkey

I got rather excited two weeks ago when I popped into M&S on my way home from work and found they had started stocking Tikves Vranec Merlot, a red wine from Macedonia. It was priced at £8.99 (though this is an introductory price, it’s probably going to go up at some point) so I couldn’t resist trying it. The name translates as dark horse and its quite apt. I’ve been a fan of Macedonian wine for a while but it’s not very well known or stocked here so I’m sure a lot of people may find this wine a pleasant surprise. It’s a strong wine, great for meaty dishes, think steak or game, and cheese too. The wine positively bursts with berry flavour. If you like syrah and cabernet sauvignon, try this, you’ll love it. The next time I popped into M&S I really explored the wine aisle and I’m glad I did. Not only did I see a white Tikves, this time a Smederevka Rkaciteli, priced at just £6.99 (again, for now!). There’s also some great value wines from Croatia and Turkey too. Check them out in the gallery below. Happy shopping!

Restaurant Week in Zagreb, Croatia

Pauza

Zagreb is one of my favourite cities in the world. It’s a gorgeous capital, with delightful architecture and a buzzing nightlife scene, not to mention some excellent restaurants (click here to read more about Purger and Restoran Katedralis). So I was rather excited to find out that this March (2013) the city will host its very own restaurant festival. Participating restaurants (and there’s a lot!) will give visitors the opportunity to enjoy a three course meal and a glass of wine for just 100kn (£12). What a bargain!

Restaurant reservations can be made from 1st March at midday and the festival runs from 8th to 17th March 2013.

Days of Olives Festival on Croatia’s Krk Otok (Island)

Krk

From October 1 to 9, 2012, the Croatian island of Krk will host the Days of Olives Festival. I love olives. I’ve always loved olives. Most people grow into them but not me. I loved them as soon as I could eat solid food, so a festival dedicated to my favourite snack needless to say got me a little bit excited! The event will showcase the fabulous health benefits of olives and you’ll even have the chance to witness and take part in a unique harvest. Local hosts will also serve up the homemade snack to the sound of a sopile which I’m told is a woodwind instrument similar to an oboe. Then there’ll be a feast in the evening, with Croatia’s best chefs all competing to prepare the best olive-based dish.

Konoba Batelina in Pula, Croatia, has been named one of the best places to eat in the world. Newsweek Magazine asked 53 of the world’s leading chefs to share their knowledge of the best restaurants in the world and Konoba Batelina made the cut. Out of 101 restaurants named, Konoba Batelina came in at number 53. I suggest you take a trip before it gets ridiculously busy, increasingly difficult to get a table, and no doubt more expensive!
