The Hedonist’s Guide to… series of guide books provides inspirational travel advice for the discerning traveller who enjoys unusual destinations and interpretations. I was lucky enough to recently take a look at Hedonist’s Guide to Baku written by Ben Illis. It is in Baku where East truly meets West; where green open spaces are juxtaposed with luxury shopping opportunities. This is hardly a surprise considering the influence of former Soviet big brother Moscow, and playground of the Middle East, Dubai.
After brief descriptions of the three oblasts of Baku, The Hg2 Baku is split into six sections: Sleep, Eat, Drink, Snack, Party and Culture. No matter what your budget or whims the Hg2 Baku provides information on an eclectic selection of ten hotels. Each mini hotel review is scored on style, atmosphere and location. There is also some fantastic imagery which inspires one to book plane tickets immediately! Similarly, the top ten restaurants includes mini reviews of restaurants serving both local and international cuisine. The elaborate imagery illustrates what an exotic but cosmopolitan city Baku really is.
However, it is the cultural section which really sells Baku. There really are some superb sights to be seen, plus some great shopping opportunities.
To conclude, the book ends with a brief but useful ‘what to know’ section and page for your own individual notes. I have certainly been inspired and I think you will be too.
