A medium to dry white, if you can get a Slovene Malvasia perhaps that would be fine. Otherwise, avoid anything too oaky. A Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris would be OK. Chablis too.

Hi Tony,

Not that I know of. However, if you are interested in visiting Sarajevo I can highly recommend flying to Dubrovnik and then taking a bus (or driving if you are happy to brave the roads yourself). The bus is a real adventure and Sarajevo is a great city. Personally I’d fly to Dubrovnik, stay for a day or two (if you are interested), take the bus to Mostar (takes a few hours) which is one of the prettiest places on earth (as well as being cheap, I stayed in a really nice pension for £4 a night!), then take a bus to Sarajevo for a couple of days. Then head back to Croatia to fly home. Train from Sarajevo isn’t bad but buses tend to be best. Also, none of the places are very big so doing a a bit of a tour ensures you don’t get bored.

Hi Maya, I’m so glad you found the little treasure trove! It’s not an easy one to spot is it! There were only men there when I visited, friendly enough but they seemed quite bewildered as to why an English girl attempting to speak Russian would be there, let alone taking photographs!

Hi! I discovered this Russian shop a couple of months ago while walking to Waterloo after my gym class. They sell a small but decent range of Russian food & some Baltic (mainly Lithuanian) food as well! Being originally from Latvia, it’s so nice to be able to buy some Latvian snacks. Definitely worth a visit!
PS the sales person (owner) does speak English, if you struggle with Russian! Also, at times the assistant is a Latvian lady and she speaks both English, Russian & Latvian :)

I also saw Tito’s cookbook at the giftstore at Tito’s Mausoleum this past weekend. I really wanted to get it, but my bags are already quite a bit overweight. I figured “Hey, no problem. I’ll just order it online when I get back to Canada”.

Now I can’t find it! :(

Yes, lots more flight announcements coming up! Is a very exciting time. Clearly the demand for cheaper travel is driving airlines to create more routes to Eastern Europe. I just hope it doesn’t suffer at the hands of travel en masse.

Having had the pleasure of visiting Kiev a year or two back I couldn’t agree more.

The city is fabulous but the one low point was the cost of transportation to our apartment. This will obviously bring that cost right down.

P.S. I assume you’ve seen that it likes one or two of Easyjet, Ryanair or Wizzair should shortly be flying to Montenegro from London. Negotiations in progress apparently.

I LOVE this place! Yeah, Manc is a brilliant city for discovering the world on a plate. So many fab restaurants but the Armenian has a place in my heart as it doesn’t conform to this modern minimalism of new restaurants. Great food and homely decor- fabulous.

I've heard that part of the world is a beautiful place for bike travel - here is the story of someone who rode from Austria to Bulgaria - not sure if he went through Serbia on his way, but probably covered similar terrain.

Hi John,

Thank you for posting on the site. I agree. While the overall meal was not terrible I was not terribly impressed. Plus, as you commented, it is very expensive. My Goulash soup to start was quite good but it was the highlight of the entire meal. It was downhill from there. I wasn’t terribly impressed with the staff either. Hopefully you have been able to enjoy better East European cuisine elsewhere.

If you are familiar with real Hungarian cuisine you will be very disappointed with the Gay Hussar. Most of the dishes are poor copies of the real homemade Hungarian fare and to be honest I would feel embarrassed to bring somebody to this eatery and proclaim it as being real Hungarian restaurant.

The quality of the dishes is poor and the taste leaves allot to be desired. When I went there the other evening they had run out of Galuska (dumplings made of flour, eggs and water) that would be like a fish and chip shop running out of chips. The lame excuse from the waitress was that they had run out of eggs and they could not buy them locally as only very special organic eggs would be acceptable!! The Gulyas soup was over spiced, the gypsy pork medallions were over cooked without a hint of garlic or taste and the shredded liver was like rubber. Finally my partner decided to try and brighten up a miserable experience by ordering the Somloi Galuska, this tasty rum flavoured sponge bathing in lashings of chocolate sauce, raisins with fresh whipped cream on-top had been turned into a piece of stale dry cake with a few drops of chocolate sauce dripped over it.

The chef has apparently been there for 22 years, I think this guy has done more to destroy the identity of Hungarian food than anybody else. At £80 for two for such a disaster I would recommend that this place is avoided like the plague. Unfortunately, if you want to experience real Hungarian cuisine you have to travel to Hungary!

In 1991 or 92 we attended the Polish-Turkish Jazz festival in Istanbul – it was fabulous…
There was a female singer who sang in near perfect English and was terrific. My wife says she was American, I say she was Turkish… any way to find out? Help?

I know what you mean about Kiev. When I stayed there I stayed a hotel quite far from the centre which was quite awful! Hi, it is interesting article, though it remains still unclear for me how and where to accomodate? The matter is that I travel a lot and know simply all possible troubles. For instance, it turned to be quite expensive to get luxury Kiev apartments through my last visit to Ukraine. And what about Regensburg accomodation?

2-There is a winemaking company called hilltop which exports 6 million bottles /year to the uk`s supermarkets (morrison, somerfield, cooperative, waitrose), so they have to call there wines in different names in different supermarkets, eva + especially = waitrose…
